• Cholelithiasis: Presence of calculus/ calculi in gall bladder with normal wall thickness is known as cholelithiasis.
  • Symptoms: Symptoms are right upper abdominal pain, dyspepsia, fullness of abdomen,bloating or may be asymptomatic. Impaction of calculi at neck or cystic duct leads to acute calculus cholecystitis. Passage of calculi in Common bile duct may lead to biliary colic , surgical jaundice & acute pancreatitis.
  • Findings: Shows presence of calculi in gall bladder/ common bile duct, its mobility & complications.

  • Cholecystitis: Cholecystitis is Inflammation of gall bladder. Acute calculus cholecystitis results when calculus/calculi get impacted at neck of gall bladder or cystic duct.
  • Symptoms: Right upper abdomen, nausea, vomiting & fever(sometimes)
  • Finding: Sonography shows thickened oedmatous walls of gall bladder & impacted calculi. Sludge, pericholicystic fluid , localized abscess are additional findings. Sometimes gall bladder is so overdistended that impacted calculi may not be visualized.


  • Choleydocholithiasis (Calculus/ Calculi in Biliary tree): Passage of calculus/caculli in common bile duct leads to biliary colic, nousea, vomitting.
  • Surgical jaundice and pancreatitis are complication.
